About Our Youth Ministry
Who we are:
Our Youth Ministry program is now going into its 38th year and we are very proud of our accomplishments, our young people, our youth directors, and our truly wonderful parish which supports us and encourages us every inch of the way, and in whose name we do our mission.
"When the church hears the cry of the oppressed it cannot but denounce the social structures that give rise to and perpetuate the misery from which the cry arises." ~ Saint Oscar Romero
Through Saint Oscar Romero Youth Ministry committees, we inspire high school leaders within our community; we are for youth, with youth, and by youth. We propel students into the lives of others who are struggling and know that not only will they perhaps make someone’s life a little better, but that they will come back stronger in their own sense of accomplishment, wiser in their view of the world, more appreciative for what they have, less envious of what they have not, more compassionate for their fellow man, more humble and more understanding of Jesus’ word and their faith.
A little about our committees:
Saint Oscar Romero Youth Ministry is composed of nine different committees, who each work with a unique population within our community. Our largest committee is Kids Camp where our high school counselors plan for months before camp to create crafts, games, and other activities for their campers come July. Kids Camp is our most popular committee and has touched countless families and individuals. Another popular committee is Christmas in the City (CITC), where we work with several homeless shelters in our surrounding communities to share the spirit of Christmas by throwing a holiday party and giving gifts to the children attending. Our Operation Lazarus (Op Laz) committee brings hot meals, conversations, and acceptance once a month to the homeless population on Boston Common. Father Bill’s committee once a month visits Father Bill’s House in Quincy and prepares a meal for the shelter’s residence while listening to the residents' stories and struggles with open ears. The Ski Trip committee plans and attends a weekend ski getaway for one weekend in February which allows the Youth Ministry group to bond further and come back rejuvenated for the rest of the year. HOPE House (House of Possibilities, Easton) is a center for those of all ages with varying disabilities. Our committee visits once a month and plans crafts, games, and has meaningful conversations with their clients. Our Senior Bingo committee runs and plays bingo with our parish’s senior citizens at 4:00 pm during the last Sunday of each month. The Sojourner House committee plans parties and varying events, such as bowling, for three local homeless shelters that specifically help single mothers and those escaping difficult home situations. Our final committee is the Outreach committee that plans all our summer service trips to Olive Hill, KY; the St. Francis Inn, PA; the New Hampshire Veterans Home; and a disaster relief trip that changes each year.
All of our Youth Ministry work is done in conjunction with organizations and individuals that live the mission throughout the year, 365 days, 24 hours a day.
Our best work is done in the community environment, where we can build a relationship with the people, in the name of Canton Catholic.
